Abstract

Triglycerides or what is often called triglycerol is a type of fat found in the blood and various organs of the body. Triglycerides function as fat transport and storage, triglycerides are also used as the main energy source in the body, one of which is to provide energy for metabolic processes. Other studies also state that smoking is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases where smoking will cause abnormalities in lipoprotein metabolism and endothelial function which will also affect triglyceride values. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in blood triglyceride values in active smokers and non-smokers. Methods: This research is an analytic observational study with a cross sectional approach in which 60 samples were examined only once. The data were analyzed statistically by using the Mann Whitney test. Results: The results of this study indicate that there is a difference in blood triglyceride values in active smokers and nonsmokers where the P value is 0.000 (<0.05). Conclusions and suggestions: The conclusion of this study is that the triglyceride value in active smokers aged 40-55 years with an average value of 181.93 mg/dl and triglyceride values in nonsmoking patients aged 40-55 years obtained an average value 112.96 mg/dl and Pvalue 0.000 (<0.05) which means that there is a difference in triglyceride values in active smokers and non-smokers. Suggestions from the researchers are that other studies should be carried out on a larger population and larger number of samples, with an even distribution of samples and involving female subjects to broaden the generalizability of the research results.
