Abstract

Binahong (Andredera cordifolia) is one of the medicinal plants that is widely used by the community as traditional medicine. Binahong is a potential medicinal plant that can overcome various types of diseases. Thi splant comes from South Amerika and has been knows as a medicinal plant in its home country since hundreds of years ago. Binahong leaves are known to have active substances contained in them such as saponins, polyphenols, alkaloids, oleanolic acid, as antioxidants an antibacterials. Escherichia coli is gram negative and as a bacterium that causes diarrhea, this bacterium resides in the gastrointestinal tract. This study aims to prove the inhibition of binahong leaf decoction on the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria, this research is an experimental laboratory research using Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method to determine the diameter of the bacterial inhibition zone, the concentration of binahong leaf decoction used is 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, ciprofloxacin as a positive control and aquadest as a negative control. The result showed that the decoction of binahong leaves gave a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at a concentration of 25% against Escherichia coli bacteria with a diameter of 6,40 mm. At the highest concentration 100% diameter 30,16 mm. Keywords : Binahong,Escherichia coli, kirby bauer
