Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is an extraordinary human health problem that occurs throughout the world. Hyperglycemia is the main cause of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus or exceeding normal limits and can cause complications. Macrophages are immune cells that play an important role through all stages of pathogenesis and can phagocytose foreign objects that enter the body during an inflammatory process. Macrophages carry out functions as antigen presentation, phagocytosis and immunomodulation through the production of cytokines. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between the number of macrophage cells in the liver of rats (rattus norvegicus wistar) and induced diabetes. This type of research is laboratory experimental research with a post test design only research design, animal care and treatment plans carried out in the Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Perintis Indonesia University. Macrophage cell examination was carried out at the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University. The blood sugar level in control rats was 103.33 ± 17,952 SD, and the blood sugar level in rats (rattus norvegicus wistar) induced by diabetes increased to 552.00 ± 73,376 SD. The research results showed that the average blood glucose level in rats (rattus norvegicus wistar) was 552.00 mg/dL and the average increase in the number of macrophages in the liver of rats (rattus norvegicus wistar) was 14.433%. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the number of macrophage cells in the liver of rats (rattus norvegicus wistar) and induced diabetes. Based on the p value of 0.002, which means there is a relationship between the two variables above.
