Abstract
Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by a chronic increase in blood pressure, which can cause serious disorders in the cardiovascular system, such as damage to the walls of blood vessels and vital organs. One of the alternative treatments that continues to be developed is the use of natural ingredients, one of which is the kandis fruit (Garcinia cowa Roxb. ex Choisy). This fruit is known to contain various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which act as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and antihypertensive compounds through mechanisms involving the inhibition of oxidative stress and improvement of endothelial function in blood vessels. This study used 25 male white rats as experimental animals, which were divided into five groups: doses of 40 mg/kgBW, 80 mg/kgBW, negative control, positive control, and reference group. Hypertension induction was performed using prednisone and NaCl administered for 7 days. Blood pressure measurements were taken before induction, after induction, and after administration of the test preparations using the Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP) CODA system. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s test. The results showed that administration of the hexane extract of kandis fruit could lower blood pressure and improve the histological structure of the aorta in hypertensive rats. The most significant improvement was observed at the highest dose (80 mg/kgBW), where the thickness of the tunica media decreased, and the endothelial integrity of the aorta improved compared to the hypertensive control group. In conclusion, the hexane extract of Garcinia cowa has potential as a natural antihypertensive agent that provides protective effects against aortic tissue damage, presumably through the active role of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) contained within the fruit.
