Abstract

African catfish, scientifically called Clarias gariepinus, is a type of fish that lives in fresh water. This fish is widely cultivated in Indonesia because of its affordable price, delicious taste, and health benefits. This study was conducted to identify the presence of Ascaris lumbricoides worm eggs in the digestive tract of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) using a descriptive (direct) method with 2% eosin staining. A total of 15 catfish taken from the cultivation pond were examined microscopically after surgery and preparation of their digestive tracts. This study was conducted from January to June 2025, coinciding with the Biomedical Laboratory UPT of the Indonesian Pioneer University (UPERTIS). The 2% eosin staining method was used to clarify the morphology of the worm eggs in microscopic observations. The results showed that 1 in 15 samples (6.67%) tested positive for Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. Although the infection rate is relatively low, this finding indicates the potential for parasite contamination that can interfere with fish health and pose a risk to consumer health if not handled properly. Therefore, regular monitoring and inspection of farmed fish need to be carried out periodically to prevent the spread of parasites, improve the quality of fishery production, and ensure food safety from fishery products. Keywords: Ascaris lumbricoides, African catfish, 2% eosin, parasitic infection
