Abstract

Chronic Kidney Failure (CKF) is a condition that causes kidney function to decline gradually, which affects the kidney's ability to excrete waste, control fluid balance, and produce the hormone erythropoietin which is very important for the formation of red blood cells. One of the main complications that arise due to CKF is anemia, which can be identified through analysis of erythrocyte indices such as Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). The purpose of this study was to explore the description of erythrocyte indices in CKF patients at Hermina Padang Hospital. This study is a descriptive analysis conducted between January and June 2025 using secondary data from laboratory results of CKF patients during 2023 to 2024. Samples were taken by total sampling, involving 30 patients. The data analysis process was carried out univariately and presented in the form of a frequency distribution table. The results of the study revealed that most CKD patients were male (60%) and had anemia (87%) with hemoglobin and hematocrit levels below normal levels. The average MCV value was recorded at 79.57 fL, MCH at 28.77 pg, and MCHC at 34.17%. These findings indicate that most CKD patients have normocytic normochromic anemia, which is likely due to decreased erythropoietin production. This study highlights the importance of monitoring erythrocyte indices as part of the anemia evaluation in CKD patients, to support better diagnosis and clinical management.
