Abstract

Mercury is a well-known toxic heavy metal that can adversely affect human health, particularly the hematological system and vital organs such as the kidneys. Chronic exposure to mercury can disrupt hematological parameters, including hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. This study was motivated by concerns regarding the health impacts of mercury exposure on gold miners. The research question addressed is: What is the complete blood profile of traditional gold miners in Nagari Mundam? The objective is to analyze the blood profile based on age, duration of work, and specific hematological parameters, such as hemoglobin levels, erythrocyte count, leukocyte count, platelet count, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. This study employed a descriptive design with a sample of 10 gold miners selected through inclusion criteria. Blood analysis was conducted using a Hematology Analyzer. Results showed that the majority of miners (80%) were aged 41–60 years and 70% had been working for more than 10 years. About 80% of the respondents had normal levels of hemoglobin and erythrocytes, while 20% showed decreased values. All respondents had normal levels of leukocytes, platelets, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. The findings indicate a trend of reduced hemoglobin and erythrocyte levels among some miners, potentially serving as early indicators of mercury-induced health effects ABSTRAK Keyword : Complete Blood Profile, Mercury, Traditional Gold Mining, Gold Miners.
