Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs but potentially spreading to other organs. Accurate diagnosis of pulmonary TB relies heavily on sputum examination, either through microscopic detection of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) or molecular methods such as the Genexpert test. The quality of the sputum sample plays a crucial role in achieving diagnostic accuracy. Homever, in practice, many patients submit sputum samples contaminated with saliva due to a lack of proper instruction and understanding. This contamination results in samples that do not meet the expected quality standards, as saliva-diluted sputum contains fewer bacilli and may reduce the sensitivity of laboratory examination. Ideally, sputum should be a pure lower respiratory tract specimen, characterized by a thick, yellowish to greenish appearance. Therefore, proper patient education on correct sputum collection techniques is essential to ensure high-quality samples, improve diagnostic reliability, and support effective TB control programs.
