Abstract

Type II Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease often accompanied by dyslipidemia, particularly characterized by low levels of HDL cholesterol. An increase in Body Mass Index (BMI) can worsen the metabolic condition of diabetic patients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and HDL levels in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus at Padang Panjang General Hospital. This quantitative research used a cross-sectional design involving 97 respondents selected through purposive sampling. BMI data were obtained from body weight and height measurements, while HDL levels were measured using the Sysmex BX-3010 analyzer. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with SPSS software. The results showed that 23.7% of respondents had a normal BMI, 32.0% were pre-obese, 36.1% obese class I, and 7.2% obese class II. Normal HDL levels in women were found in 32.0% and abnormal in 25.8%, while in men 32.0% were normal and 10.3% abnormal. The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between BMI and HDL levels (p = 0.025). Therefore, it can be concluded that an increase in BMI is associated with a decrease in HDL levels, indicating that weight control is essential to prevent cardiovascular complications in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.
