Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin deficiency, insulin resistance, or a combination of both. Hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus causes an increase in High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and increases oxidative stress. This decrease in HDL can lead to increased cholesterol levels and the risk of atherosclerosis, which also worsens oxidative stress and increases the production of free radicals. Several studies have shown that clove extract has antioxidant activity and can lower blood glucose and HDL levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in HDL levels before and after administration of clove extract and metformin in hyperglycemic rats. This study was a true experiment using a Randomized Pre-Post Test Control Group Design. The sample was rat serum. The tool used was a photometer with a photometric method. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro Wilk test and the dependent T test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in HDL levels before and after administration of clove flower extract p Value <0.05 and metformin p Value <0.05. The conclusion of this study is that there was an increase in HDL levels after administration of clove flower extract and metformin in hyperglycemic rats.
