Abstract

Hands are the main medium for transmitting pathogenic bacteria. School-aged children are vulnerable to infections due to poor hand hygiene. One of the preventive measures is the use of hand sanitizer. This study aimed to identify the types of bacteria found on students’ hands before and after using hand sanitizer at SDN 31 Pasir Kandang. The method used was descriptive with an observational approach. Samples were taken from the hands of 10 students before and after using hand sanitizer. Bacterial identification was conducted through culture tests, Gram staining, and sensitivity tests to novobiocin. The results dominant types of bacteria: Staphylococcus epidermidis. After using hand sanitizer, of the five samples tested, only one still showed bacterial colony growth. The bacteria identified was Staphylococcus epidermidis.handsanitizer with 75 % alcohol content is evective in killing Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria on the hands off school children.
