Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that around 8.4 million people in Indonesia had diabetes in 2021. This number is expected to increase to 21.3 million by 2030. Smoking is one of the risk factors that can worsen insulin resistance and increase blood glucose levels. This study aims to determine the comparison of fasting blood glucose levels between smokers and non-smokers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Padang Panjang Hospital. This study is a comparative quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach which was carried out in February-April 2025 at Padang Panjang Hospital. The sample of 100 people consisted of 50 smokers and 50 non-smokers who were selected using the purposive sampling technique. Fasting blood glucose levels were checked using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method. The normality test using Shapiro-Wilk showed that the data was normally distributed (p > 0.05), so it was followed by the Independent T-Test. The results of the analysis showed a value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), which means that there was a significant difference between the fasting blood glucose levels of smokers and non-smokers. It can be concluded that smokers have higher fasting blood glucose levels than non-smokers. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, Fasting Blood Glucose, Smokers, Non-Smokers, POCT
