Abstract

Chromium (Cr) in its hexavalent form (Cr⁶⁺) is a toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal that can decrease the number of erythrocytes and potentially cause anemia. This study aimed to determine the relationship between Cr levels and erythrocyte counts in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to heavy metals. The study design used a post-test only control group with six rats, consisting of a control group (2 rats) and a treatment group (4 rats) injected with a Cr solution (1,000 mg/L). Chromium levels were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), while erythrocyte counts were analyzed with a Hematology Analyzer. The results showed that Cr levels increased over time, while erythrocyte counts decreased. The Spearman test indicated a significant negative correlation between Cr levels and erythrocyte counts (p = 0.036; r = -0.841). It can be concluded that increased Cr levels are associated with a decrease in erythrocyte count, indicating Cr’s potential role in inducing anemia.
