Abstract

Antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria is developing rapidly, necessitating the search for new antibiotic alternatives derived from natural sources, such as endophytic fungi from dahlia tubers. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of endophytic fungi against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Fungal isolates were obtained from dahlia tubers, fermented using Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) with a shaking method, and tested using the disk diffusion method. The results showed that secondary metabolites from endophytic fungus isolate A-1 exhibited antimicrobial activity, with inhibition zones of 32.75 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and 38.3 mm against Candida albicans. GC-MS analysis revealed that the isolate produced bioactive compounds, with flavonoids being the most abundant. Molecular identification using the ITS gene showed that isolate A-1 had 100% similarity with Aspergillus fumigatus strain 2011f6 (MT558940.1). These findings indicate that endophytic fungus A-1 has potential as a natural antimicrobial agent. Keyword : Dahlia tuber, endophytic fungi, antimicrobial, GC-MS.
