Abstract
The use of irrational antimicrobial drugs has side effects that can endanger the patient. Extracts of laurel ethanol (Syzygium polyanthum [Wight] Walp) contained essential oils, alkaloids, tannins, and flavonoids suspected to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Escherichia coli is a bacterium that acts as a normal flora in the human body. If it exceeds a certain limit, both of these bacteria can become pathogens. The laurel leaves have an active substance with antibacterial effects ie: tannins, flavonoids, essential oils, and alkaloids. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory power of leaf extract of salam on the growth of Escherichia coli. The type of this research is laboratory experiment with diffusion method of kirby odor disc. Inhibitory power is obtained based on the measurement of drag zones formed around the disc paper using the sliding term. The experiment was done three times repetition with positive control that is antibotics ciprofloxaxin and negative control of aquadest and got average result at 25 mg concentration that is 14 mm, at concentration 50 mg that is 16 mg, and concentration 75 mg ie 20 mm. While on the positive control in obtaining the average result of inhibitory power is 31 mm and on negative control 0 mm. The results of the inhibitory test of bay leaves extract (Syzygium polyanthum [Wight] Walp) against Escherichia coli bacteria were smaller than positive control (Ciprofloxaxin). Keywords : leave extract, Escherichia coli
