Abstract
Candida albicans includes normal flora in the oral mucosa, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, vaginal mucosa, and under the nails. However, if there are physiological changes or decreased immunity, the fungus Candida albicans will be pathogenic. As many as 50-90% of candidiasis in humans is caused by Candida albicans. Chemical compounds from bitter melon are flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, hydroxytriptamine, quarantin, tricosanic acid, resinic acid, and quarantin. In addition, bitter melon is efficacious as an antioxidant, cough medicine, reduces red eyes, malaria, increases appetite, dysentery, rheumatism, increases breast milk, menstrual pain, etc. The purpose of this study was to determine whether bitter melon extract could inhibit the growth of the fungus Candida albicans. The type of this research is experimental. Testing of bitter melon extract started at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100%. Then cultured on Saboroud Dektrose Agar media. The results showed that there was an effect of bitter melon extract in inhibiting the growth of the fungus Candida albicans. The greatest inhibition was a concentration of 50% with an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 14.3 mm. Keywords : Zone of inhibition, bitter melon, Candida albicans.
