Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that affects an individual's thoughts, emotions and behavior, which generally requires long-term antipsychotic therapy as the primary treatment. However, the use of antipsychotic drugs for a certain duration, especially Atypical Antipsychotics, is known to have the potential to cause metabolic side effects such as increased blood sugar levels. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the duration of antipsychotic therapy and increased blood sugar levels in schizophrenia patients at Dr. Sadikin Hospital, Pariaman City. This study is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design with an unpaired T-test. This study is useful in helping to understand the metabolic safety aspects of antipsychotic therapy, especially related to blood sugar and can be an initial basis for more evidence-based clinical practice in the field of psychiatry. The subjects of the study were patients received antipsychotic therapy for 3-4 months and 6-7 months. The results of the study showed that the average blood sugar levels in 3-4 months of antipsychotic therapy were 120.5±32.77 mg/dl and in 6-7 months of antipsychotic therapy were 116±29.85 mg/dl. The results of the statistical test obtained a p value of 0.744 (p>0.05) There is no significant relationship between the duration of antipsychotic therapy and increased blood sugar levels in schizophrenia patients at Dr. Sadikin Hospital, Pariaman City.
