Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and carries a risk of triggering opportunistic fungal infections, such as Candida albicans. High glucose levels in DM patients create an environment that supports fungal growth, particularly in the urinary tract. C. albicans infection is common among DM patients, especially women, and may lead to vaginal candidiasis. This study aims to describe the presence of C. albicans in the urine of Diabetes Mellitus patients. The study used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. It was conducted from January to June 2025 with a total of 6 samples at the Biomedical Laboratory, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Perintis Indonesia. The results showed that 1 DM patient had Candida albicans. Macroscopic observation on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium revealed round colonies, white to yellowish-white in color, with a smooth surface and a strong acidic odor. Microscopically, observation with Lactophenol Cotton Blue preparations showed round to oval-shaped cells and the presence of pseudohyphae. Gram staining revealed oval, paired, Gram-positive yeast cells. The germ tube test showed a positive result, indicated by the formation of non-septate germ tube structures after incubation in human serum. Based on all test results, it can be concluded that Candida albicans was found in the urine of Diabetes Mellitus patients, with 1 sample testing positive. The colony and cell morphology were consistent with the characteristics of Candida albicans. Gender and age factors of DM patients also influence the presence of this fungus.
