Abstract

including the small intestine. Two animal models commonly used in research are diabetic mice induced by a high-fructose diet and mice induced by alloxan. This study aims to determine the differences in the histopathological features of small intestinal tissue in both models. The study design was a laboratory experiment using 21 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into three groups: a control group, a fructose diabetes group, and an alloxan diabetes group. Small intestine samples were processed using histotechnical methods, stained with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE), and observed under a light microscope. The results showed that the histological structure of the small intestine appeared normal in the control group. In the alloxan group (n=6), mild to moderate damage was found in the form of muscularis hypertrophy, inflammatory cell infiltration, villi shrinkage, and minor necrosis. Meanwhile, in the fructose group (n=7), histopathological damage was more severe, characterized by muscularis hypertrophy, epithelial hyperplasia, extensive inflammatory cell infiltration, villi shrinkage, and focal necrosis. Thus, it can be concluded that the fructose diabetes model causes more severe damage to the small intestine tissue compared to the alloxan model. This indicates that fructose consumption does not improve, but rather exacerbates damage to the intestinal mucosa. ABSTRAK Keywords: Diabetes, Fructose, Alloxan, Small intestine, Histopathology
