Abstract
Pulmonary tuberculosis (pulmonary TB) is an infectious disease that can be transmitted and caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which primarily attacks lung tissue. A decreased immune system in patients with pulmonary TB often triggers the emergence of other opportunistic infections, including fungal infections. Types of fungi commonly found in patients with pulmonary TB include Candida albicans and Aspergillus spp. The purpose of this study was to detect the presence of fungi in the sputum of pulmonary TB patients as an effort to identify the possibility of secondary infections that could potentially worsen the patient's health condition. This study used a descriptive method by collecting sputum samples from pulmonary TB patients at the Lubuk Alung Pulmonary TB Hospital from February to June 2025, which were then analyzed using Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media and stained using Lachtophenol Cotton Blue macroscopically and microscopically. The results showed that some samples showed the growth of fungal colonies with morphological characteristics resembling Candida spp. and Aspergillus spp. The most common fungus found in pulmonary tuberculosis patients is Aspergillus spp., indicating that this type of fungus is a major opportunistic pathogen in individuals with lung damage due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. From these results, it can be concluded that the prevalence of fungal infections in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis is highest in the productive age group, namely 19–59 years, and is more common in male patients. Some pulmonary TB patients experience secondary fungal infections that have the potential to worsen the prognosis and require appropriate treatment. Therefore, early detection of fungal infections in pulmonary TB patients is important to prevent further complications.
