Abstract
Microplastics are environmental pollutants <5 mm in size that may endanger human health and ecosystems. This study aimed to identify microplastic forms and evaluate their effects on the intestinal tissue of white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The method used was histology with microscopic observation. The findings revealed several forms of microplastics, including fragments, films, pellets, foam, and fibers. In the negative control group, intestinal tissue appeared normal without epithelial damage, edema, or inflammation. At 1:6 exposure, epithelial desquamation and mucosal edema with inflammatory cells were observed. At 1:12 exposure, more severe damage occurred, including ulceration, edema, and extensive inflammation. The study concludes that microplastic exposure causes intestinal tissue damage in the form of desquamation, ulceration, edema, inflammation, and mucosal thinning.
