Abstract

One of the most common diseases causing death and infection worldwide is tuberculosis (TB), which is caused by a pathogenic germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB usually attacks the lungs, but can spread to other parts of the body, called extrapulmonary TB. The type of tuberculosis known as extrapulmonary tuberculosis is the type that attacks other organs such as the lungs. This study aims to detect the Candida albicans gene in tuberculosis patients using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method after isolation on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media. The PCR method was used on samples of people suffering from tuberculosis to test for the presence of the Candida albicans gene. The results showed that the Candida albicans gene was found in some samples of people suffering from tuberculosis. These results indicate that molecular examination is very important to detect fungal infections in TB patients and there were 4 samples that contained positive Candida albicans, by producing a Candida albicans DNA band of ± 600 bp with primers ITS1 and ITS4, so that more appropriate and comprehensive treatment can be given. This study found that the PCR method can detect Candida albicans genes in tuberculosis patients well. To prevent further complications, this examination should be considered as part of laboratory screening in tuberculosis patients. The conclusion is that there are four Candida albicans fungal samples produced positive by the culture method, PCR produces Candida albicans fungal DNA bands in the samples and tuberculosis patients; and the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method is more sensitive than the culture method, with the results of Candida albicans DNA bands ± 600 bp with primers ITS 1 and ITS 2. Keywords: Candida albicans, tuberculosis, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
