Abstract

High cholesterol is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, characterized by increased levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, as well as decreased HDL levels. Although cholesterol-lowering drugs such as simvastatin are effective, their long-term use may cause adverse effects. Therefore, natural-based alternatives with potential as complementary therapies are needed to help improve lipid profiles. One such plant with promising potential is the Garcinia cowa Roxb. ex Choisy (asam kandis) fruit, which contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, garcinol, and hydroxycitric acid that play a role in reducing cholesterol levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of methanolic extract of Garcinia cowa fruit on serum HDL levels and liver histopathology in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with pork oil. This research was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design consisting of five treatment groups: negative control, positive control (pork oil induction), treatment with methanolic extract of Garcinia cowa fruit at doses of 40 mg/kg BW and 80 mg/kg BW, and a comparison group given simvastatin. The results showed that the positive control group experienced a decrease in HDL levels and histological changes in the liver, including fat degeneration (steatosis), cytoplasmic vacuolization, hydropic degeneration, and sinusoidal narrowing. Administration of the methanolic extract of Garcinia cowa fruit at a dose of 40 mg/kg BW showed partial recovery of liver structure, while the 80 mg/kg BW dose exhibited more significant improvement characterized by increased HDL levels and nearly normal liver structure similar to the simvastatin group. It can be concluded that the methanolic extract of Garcinia cowa fruit contains natural compounds with potential as a supporting agent for cholesterol therapy, capable of increasing HDL levels and providing hepatoprotective effects against liver damage induced by pork oil.
