Abstract

Soil Transmitted Helminth worm infection is a common health problem in children, especially in areas with low sanitation. Poor personal hygiene is one of the main risk factors that can increase the possibility of this infection. This study aims to determine the relationship between Soil Transmitted Helminth infection and personal hygiene behavior in Elementary School Children in Kota Tangah District. This study used a descriptive analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 18 students was taken by purposive sampling. Stool examination was carried out to detect Soil Transmitted Helminth infection using a direct microscopic method with 2% eosin, while data on personal hygiene were collected through questionnaires. Data analysis used the Chi Square test (Fisher Exact Test) with a significance level of p < 0.05. Of the 18 students, only 1 student (5.6%) was positive for Soil Transmitted Helminth (Ascaris lumbricoides) infection, while the other 17 were negative. A total of 12 students (66.7%) had good personal hygiene, and 6 students (33.3%) had poor hygiene. The results of the Chi Square (Fisher Exact) test showed a p value = 1.000, which means there is no significant relationship between Soil Transmitted Helminth infections and personal hygiene. In conclusion, although some students have poor personal hygiene habits, the results of the study show that there is no statistically significant relationship between Soil Transmitted Helminth infections and personal hygiene.
