Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, characterized by an increase in LDL cholesterol levels. The asam kandis fruit (Garcinia cowa Roxb. ex Choisy) is known to be rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and HCA, which possess antioxidant and hypolipidemic activities. This study aimed to determine the effect of methanol extract of asam kandis fruit on LDL levels and cardiac histology in hypercholesterolemic rats. The research design used was an experimental laboratory study with a pre and post test group only design. LDL levels were measured using the spectrophotometric method, while cardiac histological analysis was performed microscopically using hematoxylin-eosin staining. The results showed that administration of methanol extract of asam kandis fruit significantly reduced LDL levels (p<0.05) and notably improved cardiac histological damage muscle fibers appeared more organized, hypertrophy was significantly reduced, and cardiac structure approached normal compared to the positive control. The best effect was observed at a dose of 80 mg/kgBW, which was comparable to simvastatin. It can therefore be concluded that methanol extract of asam kandis fruit has potential as a hypolipidemic agent. Keywords: Garcinia cowa, methanol extract, LDL, hypercholesterolemia.
