Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterised by hyperglycaemia due to insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion. Chronic hyperglycaemia can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, resulting in an increase in the number of leukocytes in the blood. HbA1c is an important indicator for assessing average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months and is used to evaluate blood sugar control. This study aimed to examine the relationship between HbA1c levels and leukocyte counts in blood sugar control in patients with T2DM. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. Data were analysed using Spearman's test because they were not normally distributed. The study results showed a mean HbA1c value of 10.001% and a leukocyte count of 9,297/μL. The Spearman correlation test showed a significant relationship between HbA1c levels and leukocyte count with a p-value of 0.000 and r = 0.444. It was concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship between HbA1c levels and leukocyte count in patients with T2DM. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, HbA1c, leukocytes, glycaemic, inflammation
