Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) or canker sores is an inflammation of the oral cavity that can be caused by a Candida sp. fungal infection, known as oral candidiasis. This infection is triggered by the overgrowth of Candida albicans, a normal oral flora that develops due to poor oral hygiene. Treatment of this infection is generally carried out with antifungal agents, including herbal ingredients. One herbal ingredient that has the potential as an antifungal is tea seeds (Camellia sinensis L.), which contain bioactive compounds such as tea seed oil, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and polyphenols that have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of tea seed extract on the growth of Candida albicans. The study was conducted experimentally with five variations in tea seed extract concentration (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), and each was repeated five times. Data analysis used SPSS 22 software with a significance level of 5%. The results showed that a 100% concentration produced an inhibition zone diameter of 33 mm, while the positive control using ketoconazole showed a diameter of 30 mm. Although the inhibition zone diameter of tea seed extract was larger, both still had very strong antifungal activity. Thus, tea seed extract has potential as an alternative antifungal agent against Candida albicans, which causes thrush. Keywords: antifungal, Candida albicans, thrush, tea seeds (Camellia sinensis L.)
