Abstract

Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri Linn) is one of the medicinal plants that are widely used by people as traditional medicine. Meniran is known to have active substances contained in it such as flavonoids, tannins, filantin, as an antioxidant and antibacterial. Escherichia coli is gram negative and as a bacteria that causes diarrhea, this bacterium is in the digestive tract. This study aims to prove the power of killing meniran decoction against Escherichia coli bacteria, this study is an experimental laboratory study using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method to determine the diameter of the germ kill zone, the concentration of meniran decoction used 40%, 60%, 80%, 100 %, ciprofilaxin as a positive control and aquadest as a negative control. From the results of the study it was found that the concentration of 80% - 100% was able to kill the Escherichia coli bacteria with a kill zone formed >20 mm which has strong power. From the graph of the relationship between the concentration and the diameter of the kill zone, it is found that the higher the concentration of decoction, the greater the diameter of the killing power formed. Meniran decoction can kill the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria and meniran stew can be used as traditional medicine. Keywords: Escherichia coli, Kirby bauer.
